As one looks at Cardiff Airport destinations, it would be good to understand the airport.

The Cardiff Airport is the only airport in Wales that serves international destinations. Thus, it is the primary airport for those wishing to visit Wales. That distinction brings with it a decent enough tourist crowd. It also serves as a hub for Bmibaby, which has the largest airline presence there. Other airlines having a significant presence at the airport are Flybe, Thomson Airways, and Thomas Cook Airlines. As one can see the airport is well served by the low fare carriers. This presents some good bargains for travel.

Unlike many regional airports in the United Kingdom, the top Cardiff Airport destinations are primarily international. The top international destination is Amsterdam, which is serviced by KLM. Spain is a favorite destination from Cardiff with Bmibaby, Thomas Cook, and Thomson Airways providing those flights. Dublin is a top ten destination on Aer Arann. A couple of other top ten destinations that are interesting is Portugal (Faro Airport) and Turkey (Dalaman Airport), both served by multiple airlines. These particular destinations are not often a top destinations from other regional United Kingdom or Irish airports.

On the domestic front, Scotland and Northern Ireland are favorite Cardiff Airport destinations. As a matter of fact Edinburgh is the number one route, foreign or domestic, from Cardiff Airport. Glasgow makes the top ten. Belfast does not make the top ten destination list but is close at number eleven. Bmibaby and Flybe provide the domestic routes.

For air travellers there is always the concern about how best to make it to and from the airport. With Cardiff Airport serving flyers from throughout Wales, there are any number of ways to get to the airport and your flight without having to drive your own car and arrange parking for it while you are away.

There are five major car hire agencies that work directly from the airport. One can choose whether to spend their money on a car hire or parking and be able to get a car and turn it in before you leave so as to not risk their personal vehicle to possible accident or vandalism. The UK’s train service also connects flyers to Cardiff Airport with a new link between Cardiff and Bridgend that runs trains to the airport hourly and furnishes a bus from the train to the airport terminal.

And then there are the bus services. From Cardiff Central Station Airport Bus X91 runs regular routes to the Cardiff Airport. During the week the bus runs between 30 and 60 minutes each with Saturday’s routes running each 60 to 90 minutes. Sunday routes to Cardiff Airport are limited and are scheduled mostly at two-hour intervals throughout the daytime. Airport Bus X91 is supplemented Monday through Friday by Airport Bus 95 one-way into the Cardiff city centre for an early morning run. Bus X5 compliments and crosses schedules with X91 to increase the opportunities for arriving or leaving the airport terminal. National Express Coach Service also runs regular coach service to the airport. By booking your bus ride online they will waive the booking fee you would otherwise have to pay if you just walk in to the bus station.
