A night out at the pub is a distinctly British tradition. For the curious traveler looking to experience a bit of the real thing, Cardiff has no shortages of great pubs.
Bar En Route, located at 138a Cathay’s Terrace, is located right next to Cardiff University. A smaller, quaint place, this bar has an incredible array of bottled beers and wines from across the globe. Definitely a local’s favorite. If you’re craving a more Irish experience, check out Callaghan’s Irish Bar. This bar on Castle Street is great if you’re looking for that afternoon Guinness. The best part is it’s right next the Millennium Stadium, so you can get sloshed before watching real live football! For a similar, yet different twice, check out Flyhalf and Firkin. Once totally decked out in Rugby gear, this place has been revamped with less memorabilia, and more lounge chairs. There’s an area for the band, and Flyhalf and Firkin has easily the best jukebox in all of Cardiff.
Of course, if you want more mainstream, Cardiff is now home to a Hard Rock Cafe! Located at the Old Brewery Quarter, the Hard Rock Cafe is a testament to Cardiff’s ever increasing popularity. Famous for loads of rock and roll memorabilia on the walls, the Hard Rock Cafe also offers decent food and cheap drinks. A great place to escape the football-centric pubs of Cardiff. Also at the Brewery Quarter is the Lava Lounge & Bar. It feels like a more vintage version of the Hard Rock Cafe, choosing to play music from the 70′s and 80′s. If you go here on weekdays, they also have great specials on cocktails.
Cardiff is full of great pubs. What really makes these pubs great though are the wide range of people you will meet. No matter where you go, you’re bound to have a great time at any one of Cardiff’s pubs.
